Introducing hummus to your baby’s diet is a great way to pack in plant-based protein and healthy fats. This smooth, creamy dip is not only nutritious but also a delightful way for your little one to explore new textures and flavors.

Why Hummus is Great for Babies

Hummus is made from chickpeas, which are rich in protein, fiber, and essential vitamins. When prepared with natural ingredients like tahini and lemon juice, it becomes a delicious and nutritious food that supports your baby’s growth and development. Plus, it’s easy to blend to the perfect consistency for young babies just starting with solids.

A smooth and creamy bowl of homemade hummus, perfect for babies, served with baby rice crackers.

Ingredients:

  • 1 ½ cups frozen chickpeas

  • 2 tablespoons raw tahini

  • ¼ cup lemon juice

  • 1 garlic clove, peeled

  • 8-10 tablespoons water

  • ¼ teaspoon salt

  • ¼ teaspoon cumin

Instructions for Making Homemade Hummus for Babies:

  1. Prepare the Chickpeas: Add the frozen chickpeas to a food processor and blend until smooth. The smoother, the better for your baby’s delicate digestive system.

  2. Add Tahini and Lemon Juice: Slowly add the tahini and lemon juice while continuing to blend. The mixture will start to get creamier.

  3. Adjust the Consistency: Gradually add water, one tablespoon at a time, until you reach the desired consistency. You want it smooth enough for your baby to swallow easily but thick enough to stay on a spoon.

  4. Season with Spices: Finally, add the salt and cumin. These spices add a gentle flavor without overwhelming your baby’s taste buds.
